In September 2026, Gavi established a new global stockpile of mpox vaccines, with access coordinated by the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision (ICG). The stockpile is designed to ensure timely and equitable access to mpox vaccines during outbreaks, when demand for vaccines is likely to be high.

 

Allocations will be managed through existing mechanisms organised by the ICG, which also manages emergency stockpiles of vaccines for cholera, Ebola, meningitis and yellow fever.

 

Technical experts from the ICG’s partners – WHO, UNICEF, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and Médecins Sans Frontières – assess requests against defined criteria to ensure that the proposed target population, vaccination strategy and number of doses requested are appropriate to the epidemiological situation, aiming to reach a decision within 48 hours.

Countries eligible for Gavi support will receive vaccines from the stockpile free of charge, and can also apply for funding to support implementation of vaccine campaigns. Other countries can gain immediate access to vaccine supplies in emergency situations but will have to reimburse the cost of the vaccines.
